In 1946 North
Berwick Town Council published The Official Guide to North
Berwick calling it LETTERS from NORTH BERWICK.
With grainy black and white photos it provided a much-needed
source of information, mainly for the benefit of new visitors.
Less than a year after the end of the Second World War North
Berwick had a guide again and several have been published since
then. After an absence of many years, Goodalls Guide in
print resumed the tradition but without paid-for advertising.
Theres a lot about North Berwick thats timeless so
the introduction to the 1946 Guide is reproduced in full on the
next page. Charges in the 1946 Guide stated that a yearly ticket
for the West Golf Course was £3 and for the Burgh (now
'East Links') Golf Course, then about to be reconstructed to
make it a full 18-hole course, a round was 1s 6d
(£0.075). How times have changed, but in many ways perhaps
they havent if you read the 1946 Guides introduction
on the next page. |
