North
Berwick railway station opened in June 1850, connecting North
Berwick to Edinburgh by train. The same year the Royal Border
Bridge at Berwick-upon-Tweed opened, completing the east coast
rail link to the south. The coming of the railway created, and
continues to do so, many opportunities for North Berwick. Markets
opened up, trade expanded rapidly and the towns population
increased having been in decline. North Berwick became a very
attractive place to live, to commute from, to visit for holidays
(families often staying for the whole summer) and to enjoy leisure
time on the golf courses, beaches and in the swimming pool. The
town developed rapidly to cater for this railway-led demand.
It may be hard to believe but at one stage in the railways
rapid expansion there was a direct sleeper service from London
to North Berwick. This iconic railway poster is a Great Gateway
into Goodalls Guide and its as appropriate today
as it was almost 100 years ago. |
