WORTH VISITING in North Berwick
Firth of Forth Lobster Hatchery, the Harbour. Open daily, 10am – 4pm, April to October. On bus route 120 and 121. Housed in a fitted-out container at the harbour, near the new sea wall, the hatchery releases tens of thousands of juvenile lobsters into the Firth of Forth every year. Juvenile lobsters are reared from eggs collected daily from local female lobsters known as berried hens. The eggs are reared and nurtured into juveniles within the hatchery and, at around three months old, released back to the sea when they have passed the most vulnerable stage of development.

Open daily (except Christmas Day), 10am – 6pm, April to August, February, March, September and October, 10am – 5pm (5.30pm, Saturday & Sunday), November to January 10am – 4pm (5pm, Saturday & Sunday). On bus route 120 and 121. Control the cameras to zoom in on amazing local wildlife on the Firth of Forth islands, including the Bass Rock, the world’s largest colony of Northern gannets and BBC Countryfile Magazine’s Nature Reserve of the Year. Gift Shop and Seabird café with East Lothian’s only seaside sun deck. The Seabird Centre offers a range of boat trips (Easter to Autumn) to the Bass Rock and Isle of May National Nature Reserve, plus the Forth Ferry, a 45-minute excursion to Anstruther in Fife. There are trips available on both the 12-seat RIBs (rigid inflatable boats) and 55-seat catamaran, plus joint tickets for boat trips/the Seabird Centre.

Gift shop, gallery and café with extensive ranges of artwork, jewellery, handbags, fine toiletries, home fragrances and candles, china and glass, gift stationery, cards and wrap, baby and occasions gifts and more. The licensed gallery café offers light lunches and snacks, cakes and scones, coffees and teas and wines and beers. Nearest ‘public’ toilet to the railway station.

Telephone in advance to confirm swimming pool opening times. 0.75 mile south, on B1347. Parking. On bus route 124, X24 and X5. Largest range of indoor sporting facilities in the county. 25m swimming pool with flexible floor depth, health suite with steam room, sauna and spa pool, bodyworks gym with free weights area, dance and fitness class studio, sports hall, badminton and squash courts, indoor bowling carpets, crèche service, children’s trampolines and soft play area.
