CHURCHES & KIRKS |
|
St
Andrews Kirk Porch, near the Seabird Centre, is all
that is left standing (but the original bell, which also rang
in St Andrews Kirk, now sits, somewhat insignificantly
given its 500-year history, beside the rear entrance to St Andrew
Blackadder Church) of the once significant St Andrews Kirk
dating back to the Middle Ages. In 1590 it was the scene of desecration
by witches and warlocks who, encouraged by the devil, sought
to raise up a storm to prevent King James VI returning from Denmark
with his bride. Theres a scale model of the Auld Kirk in
the museum on School Road. |
St
Andrews Kirk (ruin) and cemetery in Kirk Ports
dates from 1664. It replaced the previous church which fell into
the sea, partly due to erosion caused by the quarrying away of
a volcanic outcrop of tufa, known as the red leck,
for oven lining. |
